LET'S TALK ART

Topic: Iraq Suite

Speaker: Emeritus Professor Liz Ashburn OAM

There is a long history of painting images of war. These miniature paintings on paper reveal the horror of war but are set in the serene beauty of decorative forms. The ornate borders are a homage to the extraordinary tradition of Islamic art but are paired with unsettling media images of the continuing war in Iraq. The paintings on canvas are inspired by another decorative tradition, that of the English and European Medieval manuscript. This talk will explain how these images developed and took on a life of their own.

Date: Friday 19 December

Time: 5.00pm - 6.00 pm

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS

Elizabeth Ashburn will be conducting a number of two hour workshops for student groups and teachers on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February 2009. For bookings and further information please contact Rhonda Chrisanthou on 5832 9520.

Getting the Story Across

Visual images are potent means of story telling. At different periods in the history of art there has been a need to convey often complex messages, and today we are bombarded with many media images that are also intended to tell us particular stories. This workshop will use some aspects of iconography to consider the ways that Islamic miniatures, Medieval manuscripts and contemporary news photographers share some aspects of design, content and imagery to picture conflict and send us their message about the world. This workshop will also refer to works in the exhibition Iraq Suite and would be of use to teachers and students of media studies, studio arts and art.

The Square and the Circle: Creating exciting designs from Islamic Pattern making

This is a practical workshop that introduces ways of applying the square and circle, which have been the basis of Islamic geometric pattern making to develop forms of individual expression. The basis of these beautiful and complex patterns will be introduced and participants will be able to create their own interpretations of these decorative abstract forms. For upper primary and lower secondary students.
